8 day Kenya
cultural safari.
Day 1: Nairobi
Meet on arrival at the airport and transfer hotel. Lunch and
later afternoon visit to Bomas of Kenya for cultural dances.
Visit the Karen Blixen meuseum, the original home of Karen
Blixen of the Out of Africa fame. Kazuri beads for African
beadwork and National meuseum for a sight of cultural artefacts.
Return to hotel for dinner and
overnight.
Day 2: Nairobi-Nyeri
Depart Nairobi after breakfast and take a relaxed drive through
Kikuyu countryside arriving at the host village in Nyeri around
mid-day. After introduction and lunch, guests will be taken to
their host families to settle down and be acquainted with each
other with an introduction of Kikuyu culture. In close proximity
each host family welcomes at least three guests including our
staff member to assist with translation where necessary. A visit
to the largest open air market (karatina) is worthwhile. On the
first evening guests and their host families gather in one place
to sing and eat together. This is an opportunity to sample
various African cuisines.
Day 3: Activities with the community
After breakfast in the respective homes, guests, accompanied by
some members of the host community gather at a central place for
a talk about the history, culture, and present-day status of the
community, and the involvement of the Green Belt Movement. Then
activities of the day begin, which will include preparing of
seedbeds, establishing tree nurseries, and planting of trees on
a public land.
Later cooking and milking are fun activity than one can engage
in to learn the community’s ways of life.
Dinner and overnight in homes.
Day 4: A visit to Aberdare Forest
Visit the Aberdare forest to see the actual impact of illegal
harvesters and destruction of trees for timber and wood fuel.
Guests will walk around to enjoy the rich and diverse fauna and
flora, before joining hands for a tree planting. Local
administration usually gets involved in this.
Guests drive back to their village
for farewell dinner during which community members are
encouraged to display their handicrafts for sale or exhibition.
Day 5: Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga
After breakfast, guests gather together to bid farewell to their
"families" and community members, before departing for Mukurwe
wa Nyagathanga , an Agikuyu cultural heritage site. This is a
mythical place of origin for Kikuyu community, therefore,
honoured and maintained as a sacred site.
Cultural history is told about the
site. Guests will undertake a ten minute walk from the site to
Gathambara, the waterhole of the first Agikuyu family - Gikuyu,
Mumbi and their children. This hole never dries up and continues
to provide clean water for the local community. Back at Mukurwe
Wa Nyagathanga,entertainment will be in full gear in.
Participate in traditional song, dance and food festival of
well-cooked Kikuyu indigenous foods.
Late afternoon drive back to Nairobi.
Dinner and overnight at a Nairobi Hotel.
Day 6: Nairobi/Amboseli
Depart Nairobi in the morning for Amboseli National Park
arriving in time for lunch. The park is famous for its big game
and great scenic beauty whose entire landscape is dominated by
Mt Kilimanjaro. Afternoon game drive.
Dinner and
overnight
Day 7: Amboseli
Early morning pre-breakfast gamedrive when you have the best
chance to see the majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. Return to the lodge
for late breakfast.Leave wih picnic lunch to visit the maasai
community village for a feel of this traditional culture. Visit
the community school and share with the local children.
Pencils,crayons and chalks are highly appreciated here.
If time allows share an English
lesson or two. The children are always eager to share their play
songs.
Return to lodge for dinner and
overnight.
Day 8:Amboseli- Nairobi
Depart for Nairobi after breakfast
with game drive enroute. Arrive in time for late lunch. Optional
shopping.
Transfer to airport for your flight
home.
