8 days  western cultural safari.

 

Day 1:Nairobi –Kakamega

Arrival at Jomo Kenyattta International Airport .Transfer to the Wilson airport for your flight to Kisumu city in western Kenya.

Kakamega is an hour's drive from Kisumu. Visit the iIlesi Pottery project run by a community of women in Kakamega .The Weeping stone of Shinyalu has myths worth hearing about. Picnic Lunch enroute.
Bullfighting is not just a Spanish tradition, it is a Kakamega tradition too. (check for the dates prior as this is usually weekend affair) Rondo Retreat, a Christian run accommodation, within the Kakamega forest is our home for the night. This is a bird watchers paradise, with some rare species e.g. the blue Turaco, grey parrots, Ross’s turaco, Turners ermomela and others special species.

Day 2: kakamega-Mt Elgon
We depart for Mt. Elgon National Park, in Kitale  after breakfast. The one hour drive past Webuye falls is very scenic. Check in at the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) Bandas and then take an afternoon game drive though the park.
The highlight will be a visit to the famous Kitum caves (salt-licks), where elephants come at night, to mine and lick salt. The caves are about 200 meters deep. We will also get a chance to view the scenic Mt. Elgon, which is partly in Uganda and partly in Kenya.

Day 3:Mt Elgon- Eldoret
After an early morning breakfast, we head for Saiwa Swamp to see the shy and very rare Sitatunga. This is a semi-amphibious antelope, which only appears either early morning or late in the evening. It is an endangered species, which, in the entire, can only be seen, in its natural habitat here. Lunch and thereafter drive to kapenguria  where Kenya's freedom fighters like the first President of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Paul Ngei, Ramogi Achieng' Oneko, Bildad Kaggia and others were detained. You will visit the Freedom Museum and cells and get entertained by a Cultural Troupe.

Day 4: Eldoret-Lake baringo

After Breakfast, you will get to explore the home of Kenya's world-renowned athletes, visit the high altitude training camps, some of which are sponsored by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and produces many of the world's athletics champions.

From Iten, we will drive you through the breathtaking Kerio Valley, stopping at Cheploch Gorge. From there we will drive you to Kipsaraman Museum, where the world's oldest fossil-the millennium man was discovered.
We will then proceed to Baringo, down the scenic valley and stay overnight at Lake Baringo. Visit the local community the Njemps and engage in their cultural activity songs and dance.

 This is also bird watchers paradise and this is an activity you can engage in the late evening.

Day 5:Lake baringo-Lake bogoria

After breakfast, visit the Reptile Park, and then drive to Lake Bogoria, to see the hot springs and flamingoes. The Bogoria hot springs generates enough heat to boil eggs. According to a Bogoria hot springs myth " boil three eggs and there will be only two available for your meal, the third one you will share with the gods". There is also a good spot for birding.

Day 6: Lake bogoria-Nakuru

Drive towards Lake Nakuru National Park and check in. Afternoon game drive, which will include a visit to the Baboon Cliff from which, the panorama covers the entire lake, settlements, and the town.

Day 7: Lake Nakuru-Nairobi.

Have an early morning game drive, breakfast at the lodge and depart for Nairobi to arrive in time for lunch. (optional carnivore lunch). Afternoon excursions/shopping (optional) before a transfer for your flight home.

(This tour may be extended to Maasai Mara for two days where you mingle with Maasai community)
